I guess it would depend on the configuration of the room. Two
different dentists I visited had different set ups, one with a row of
multiple chairs in one large room, and the other with one single chair
in a small room. The dentist or who ever always is on my right in both
cases, so I have my dog lay on my left, but closer to my feet. There
isn't a lot of space, but there's enough room for Thai to lay down. I
either make a long leash and hold it in my left hand, or tuck the
leash under my leg as usual.
I always joke that my dog has no concept of emotions, because he never
cares or even notices if I'm anxious, upset, etc, so I don't need to
worry about that. Worst case scenario, he stands up but remains in
place--he doesn't come over and get in the way or anything. Thai will
also lay back down with a hand signal, so it's no problem to get him
to lay back down even if I can't talk.
