[NAGDU] working a new guide dog, Rosy

Hi all. I would like to offer a thought for consideration as we navigate the challenges we face in the current climate where there is so much confusion and contention about service animals, emotional support animals, and the laws pertaining to them. We may find ourselves in situations where we are working our dogs and encounter another dog and aren't sure whether it is a pet or whether it is providing comfort to someone or performing a task or serving more than one function for that matter. For those of us whose guide dogs have been put at risk by an aggressive or inappropriately behaved dog, it is scary and in that moment we are thinking about our team's safety above all other things. So, keeping that in mind, I think the important thing to focus on in this current climate is whether a dog we encounter is appropriately behaved and if not, whether it poses a risk or is interfering with a guide dog. I think these questions can be helpful as we decide how to respond during these encounters. Have a great weekend everyone.

hi
first of all congratulations on new dog, I would just like to respond to the post from the last person on this thread, I feel it would be better if Medical and Emotional support dogs were to wear vests or harnesses at least this would be some form of ID to state this fact, yes I know this stuff can be purchased on line, but hopefully if laws were to change for ESA it would make our lives a bit better for us as a working team.
Just my 25cent worth of thoughts on this.
regards
Gabriel

I'm sorry that your first dog had to retire due to a dog attack, but just because the dog was not wearing a vest or a harness doesn't mean that the dog wasn't a service dog. Many of my friends who have medical service dogs or psychiatric service dogs do include vests, however it is not mandatory under any state or federal or provincial legislation. I understand that you are nervous, but just because the dog was there and didn't have a vest or a harness didn't mean the dog was not a service dog. I hope you continue working well with Rosie!
