[NAGDU] For Miranda/Long Distance Travel

Miranda,

We have long flights periodically. Cross country regularly. Last year, we went to Europe.

There are two things we do.

One, is stopping food and water six or more hours before flying, preferably eight. Plenty of pee and poop breaks, and then a good leisurely one at check in in the dog area of the airport.

Two is, we pack a couple of plastic backed training pads in the carry on. I’ll turn the pad user side down and touch it to just a small drop of my dog’s pee one day, and then let it dry. This new pad, dried, I’ll fold into a gallon ziplock. It lives in my suitcase, clean in the bag, no smell because it was only just a drop, and is dry. You can train your dog to use this in an enclosed space. I learned this once, on an Amtrack cross country train, before we had pads. My dog had an upset tract and had diarrhea spells. In a long haul without stops, she seriously communicated that she’d have to go, panting and trembling all over. We made a makeshift pad of a trash bag and newspaper in a bathroom space 2 by 2 feet. It took some communicating, but once she understood it was ok, she dropped it bullseye, we rolled it up, closed and sealed, and trashed it at the next stop. If trained for this, even easier. I have never again had to deal with this, but if needed, we (all) know this can work in a bathroom. As we learned, you never know if even when perfectly trained, one of our pups may have a digestive episode.

And then, in Amsterdam airport last year, it just happened that the airline at check in asked to see pads or another way to assure handling emergency elimination. And guess what, I reached into my case and flashed them a peak at the pads, game over. So learn and practice this maneuver so you know your dog can use it!

I have more and you can contact me offline at 707-829-0776. That’s including how to keep from dehydrating, and quick hydration on landing too, and another step if it is needed. -Peter

In case of dehydration which is a concern to anyone flying, we do carry water on board or ask for some in a cup. On long flights, we’ll give just a little tiny bit from halfway to the end of the flight, from a small infant syringe like the freebies the pharmacists give at the store, by mouth, just a little squirt to swallow, say a couple of tablespoons total. That’s only if there seems to be any dehydration. That’s to prevent dehydration, but not enough to stimulate the urinary tract.

This was sudden-- I'd moved in to my new house 2 weeks ago and the vet had put her on a new medication shortly before that which seemed to really help her. So I was surprised to see her suddenly in so much pain. So we took her in and he did some xrays because there was a marked increase in swelling of the right hind leg since her previous appointment 3 weeks ago. The xrays showed what was probably bone cancer. He said we could have done a biopsy but he felt like it would just confirm his diagnosis and he felt like it would only prolong things. So I made the choice to end her life.

My personal opinion is that these laws, though possibly a deterrent to those who would misrepresent their pets as service animals to gain access to public places where pets are generally not allowed, are unenforceable. The Americans with Disabilities act prohibits public entities and private entities that provide public accommodations from making specific inquiries about the nature or extent of a person?s disability or asking for identification or other documentation that an animal has been trained. This means that a law enforcement officer, as an agent of a public entity, may not make such inquiries beyond the two allowed by the implementing regulations:1. Is this a service animal required because of a disability? and 2. what task or work has the animal been trained to perform?

I perceive the only way this sort of measure might be enforced would be if a person were denied access with their animal, file a charge against the establishment, and when the court asked for proof the individual had standing to pursue the charges, found that there was no evidence the dog had been trained. In other words, I think it is highly unlikely this measure will ever be enforced.

I kind of knew that, once I had a guide dog, I would be spending more time educating the public. One tool I suggest for everyone is our fantastic full-color, 11 X 17 brochure entitled, Meeting a Working Guide Dog Team". It is something that is very organic. Once you give it to someone they tend to pass it along. This is why I always give two!
