I think I'm the one with the similar issue, although Monty does not have 
accidents in the house.  I work from home and am able to give him frequent 
time outside.  It's typical for him to go out about every two hours.  Like 
Crocus, Monty has been to the vet and nothing.  The vet said it's a behavior 
issue and to limit his water.  I monitor the water and will take it away if 
the amount is really excessive, but mostly I let him drink as he likes. 
He's always wanted more water than other dogs I've had from the very 
beginning.  The severity of the water intake does vary, but seems to change 
slowly over weeks.  So he might drink loads of water for a few weeks, then 
gradually go back to an above average, but not excessive amount, for a few 
weeks.  That pattern has remained steady for his entire life.  He's 11 now. 
As he's aged I haven't noticed a difference in the water intake or number of 
trips outside, but I think there is more urgency when he does need to go. 
He's very healthy.  I've always accepted his need for a lot of water and 
more trips outside as the way he is.  His last trip outside in the evening 
is around 7:30 and he's fine until 4:30 or 5 in the morning.  My last two 
elderly dogs were female and they both did need to go out in the middle of 
the night in their last years.

Coping with a dog who forgets or isn't able to make it outdoors is really 
difficult.  Belle was that way in her last few months.  Her physical health 
was fine, but cognitively she would forget where she was or what she was 
supposed to do.  She'd come in from outside and pee in the middle of the 
living room floor, like that was completely normal and the thing to do.  I 
went through a mountain of paper towels and gallons of carpet cleaner.  Her 
issues were different than what you are experiencing, but I feel your pain. 
It's a really difficult thing to deal with.

Sorry there are no easy answers. I'd probably try scheduled water and more 
frequent trips outside.  Monty generally wants out just 5 to 10 minutes 
after getting a good drink, so fairly quickly.   I really have no idea what 
else to try.

I figured out part of my problem.  I checked out the bottle I thought was
Nature's Miracle, and it was something completely different.  I located the
right bottle and re-treated the carpet, and hopefully this time it will
work.  I have a cold, so can't smell anything.  Not that I have a dog nose
anyway.

I do ration his water.  I'm not keeping him on leash or in a crate all the
time.  He's had 3 years of freedom now, and we're not going back for any
length of time.  If he can't be free in the house, he's not the dog for me.
I've taken him to the vet for this problem, early on, but it was
inconclusive.  They did some tests and found nothing unusual.  They could
have done more tests, but then there are always more tests that can be done.
If the problem persists, maybe I'll try more tests, though they get more
invasive as they go on.

We were fine last night, after I re-treated the carpet, though I did take
him out 3 times in 5 hours.

I think someone else on this list has or had a similar problem.  Did it get
worse, as the dog got older?

No more off leash time and measured out water is what I would do.  Taking
him to the vet to get him checked out medically is also a good idea.
September had a similar issue for a while.

For some reason, Krokus has decided it's OK to pee in the corner of my
living room.  I'd noticed a pee smell, and a bit of pee, but I thought it
was just dribbles.  He has this long-standing problem of drinking, then
needing to go out urgently, and he lets me know he has to go by rushing
around and sometimes dribbling.
But last night he came down, and I heard him peeing.  I let him know that
was not acceptable, and rushed him out, then did my best, again, to clean it
up.  I hope he got the message.  When he first came home, and was getting a
little off-leash freedom, he thought it would be OK to pee on the bathroom
door in the kitchen, until I caught him at it and laid down the law.  He
hasn't done it since, so I don't know why he decided to start up again.  And
I wonder if his urgency problem will get worse, as he gets older. It seems
like a shorter time now, between drinking and needing to go out, so I've
misjudged the time to take him before he starts dribbling.
Of all the things I've written to go with my guide dog application, I never
even imagined "must be housebroken" had to be one of them.
