Hi Madison and everyone,

For several people going from using a cane to a guide dog, their pace increases, it all depends on the person. You can be a slow walker and still get a guide dog.

When you do your Juno walk with an instructor, they will take note of your pace, stride, etc., and use that information on determining which dog will be the best matched for you.

For those who live in a state where orientation & mobility instruction is hard to get or is not available. Leader dogs located in Michigan offers O & M classes to anyone no matter where you live or what guide dog school you choose to attend. The seven day class is at no charge.

Take care,
Sarah

Subject: [GDUI Chat] applying for a guide dog

Hi all,
I just wanted to clearify something. I'm not actually currently applying to GDF because I have to work more on my O&M before I can apply. That's what my O&M instructor told me. I need to work mainly on my confidence and my pace, I'm a slow walker (except when I'm walking sighted guide). My instructor told me that my slow pace won't work with a guide dog. However, when my instructor tells me that I'm ready (and once I have 3 routes) then I'm deffenetly applying to GDF. I just thought that I should clearify things, in case anyone thought that I am actually currently going through GDFs application process.
Madison
