Hello Martine,

Thanks for your response. I am fascinated with your experience with your
dog and the prison. How did your dog, and the guard dog react to each
other?

Hi all,
Martine here from NZ with guide dog, Westin. When I was still living in
South Africa and studying criminology I did end up visit a prison with my
guide at the time. The only assistance I needed to receive was when, on one
level, the floor was made of some wooden plankings with some gaps in so that
guards could look down to see what the people were up to, so, when we got to
that part, I had some human guiding just to tell me when to step across some
areas which wasn't a big deal, but there was no security or other access
issues.

To get into one of the prison doors we had to step over a barrier, as the
doors were set into some kind of mold, but there again, I just got told it
will be sort of up and over as one often get on boats although higher.

Here in NZ I also had the opportunity to go to a prison and the only initial
point worth noting was the dogs that the security guards had, but once I
realised that some of them have working dogs, I could make sure Westin
didn't get distracted by them.

Cheers
Martine and Westin

I'd suggest you post this to the NFB lawyers
list, someone there will have an answer for you.

Hi all,

I had a college student contact me today with an access question. She is
blind and about 50% deaf. She has a class that requires her to go along
with the class to tour a jail. This is something the university has set up.
When the jail was informed that she would be attending with her guide dog,
they said absolutely not. They said they would have to shut down the jail
if she would bring a guide dog with her. She will be with her guide dog and
her interpreter, along with the rest of the class and they still said no.
Just looking for some advice before I get back to her with what to do?

Thanks in advance, Janell and Miss Rosy
