Great information Danielle!

Does the fish oil come in pill form? Is there a certain brand you like? Is
it the same fish oil that humans use or are there dog specific brands?

Thanks!!

Janell and Miss Rosy!

Coconut oil can be great for relieving itching, if the cause is truly dry
skin and not allergies. A teaspoon every few days likely won't do much for a
large dog though. A table spoon every day is more accurate for large breeds.
Definitely introduce it slowly, but use your dog's general sensitivity to
diet change as a guide as too how quickly you can go. Some dogs are very
sensitive, while others pretty much have an iron stomach (a lot of Labs do).

You might find that fish oil is actually more beneficial though. It provides
the same benefits to the coat as adding any healthy fat source, but also
contains a high concentration of animal sourced omega-3s. Omega-3s are
excellent for inflammation of any kind, whether it is dry skin, allergies,
joints, etc. Most people give fish oil at a rate of 200 mg/10 lb of body
weight as a maintenance dose (just for its health benefits), or around 300
mg/10 lb of body weight as a therapeutic dose (for dogs with health issues
like allergies or dry skin).

Remember when adding any extra higher calorie supplements to reduce the
dog's food accordingly to prevent weight gain. For example, one table spoon
of coconut oil has 120 calories which is about the same as a quarter cup of
most kibble.
