[NAGDU] Owner training a guide dog

There are very, very few trainers who will train guides for others outside of a program setting.  I do know of a few private trainers, but you would have to send your dog away and it is expensive.  If you are interested in owner training, as in you the owner train the dog, then there are resources.  However it is you doing all the work and it is a lot of work.  I have one book currently available on Amazon in either large print or a Kindle download.  I am working on a second book, but it won't be done until sometime next year.  I host a free Zoom chat every other Saturday night. It's pretty casual with no set agenda, although I think I am going to experiment with topics, but it will still be everyone sharing their experiences.  I also teach a class with Meghan Whalen on owner training.  We just finished the last one and have not scheduled the next one yet. There are groups on Facebook and loads of dog training info on the internet.

My opinion on owner training is that you will need the following at a minimum:
Enough spare time to train a dog, likely a few hours each day
The financial ability to purchase a dog, provide vet care, quality food, purchase equipment etc.
Pretty decent O&M skills, the dog isn't trained when you start so you will be responsible for keeping both of you safe
Some knowledge of dogs and dog training, knowledge of how guide dogs work is important
Support from others.  I don't mean help with training necessarily, but you will need someone to talk to who supports you when it gets hard and it most certainly will be very difficult at times.  Again, I haven't found the actual training to be overly difficult, but dealing with the public, nosy neighbors, unsupportive family and then you twist your ankle on a hole in the sidewalk and well, you'll appreciate having someone to be your cheerleader and remind you why you wanted to do it in the first place.
