If something happens so your dog has to wear the dreaded "cone of shame", I
recommend getting the Zen cone. Instead of being a big, stiff piece of
plastic, it is made of what feels like raincoat cloth panels alternating
with clear plastic panels. The dog can see through the plastic panels, and
the cloth makes it much more flexible.
While I was away this weekend, my retired guide Krokus was bitten by a dog
while he was out for a walk with my husband. He had to get stitches, and he
has to wear the cone for a couple weeks. Jerry says Krokus was much more
comfortable as soon as he changed to the Zen cone. Now he can lie in his
usual corner, or walk upstairs to his other favorite spot. He had trouble
doing either of those things with the stiff cone because it kept banging
into the wall or the stairs. He seems more comfortable lying down, too.
And it's not so uncomfortable for me too, when he bumps me with the cone.
It cost something to change, but it was worth it.
The bite is very near Krokus's eye, so we're very glad it wasn't much worse.
And the biter's owner has been very decent, taking Jerry and Krokus to the
vet, paying the vet bill, which was considerable, and helping Jerry get to
Petco to get the better cone.
