[NAGDU] schools that use food rewards

Madison,

Worldwide the majority of blind people are unemployed. In America for
example the majority of people with guides are not working.

While it is good you realize you have work to do, putting in an application
usually means you meet an instructor from that school. They can access you,
work out your capabilities and even give you step by step instructions on
aspects they feel you need to work on.

In other words
Meeting an instructor from your preferred school simply by putting in an
application could turn out to be the best thing you do. Wait lists are long.
While you might not be ready yet, it is about building that relationship
with those who can help you the most, and that is going to be an instructor.

The first time I applied to a school an instructor came and visited. He
decided I would be capable of managing a dog, but my application didn't go
any further then because he felt I wasn't ready. That instructor while
refusing me a dog at that stage wrote out a step by step list of aspects he
felt I could work on. He encouraged me and even called 6 months later to see
how I'd taken his advise.

Having gone through that application process was simply amazing, the
instructor was able to answer all my questions, to give me an idea of what
sort of dog I would be likely to need, and so dam encouraging. His step by
step list of aspects he felt I needed to work on made all the difference.
The encouragement I got as a result of failing the application at that stage
made it very clear to me just where I'd be going for a dog. Yes you guessed
it correctly, straight back to that school. Dipping one's toe in to the
water just a bit can make all the difference. Seriously I can tell you that
for sure.

Cheers.

Brent.

Hi Cindy,
Sorry that you'll see this exact same message twice.
I am dealing with some yes. I know that my lifestyle isn't suitable for a
guide dog as I hardly go anywhere as I don't have a job or anything and
besides I doubt my O&M skills are good enough even though I've working with
an instructor so I don't think it'd be wise to apply to any schools right
now as I'm fairly certain that I wouldn't be accepted to any. I just want to
gather information on the various schools for when/if the time comes that I
feel like there's a real chance that I'd get accepted; in other words ready
to apply.

Hello Cindy,

Some people just like asking question after question. I do wonder...

To your point, another aspect Madison might take in to account is that once
you meet with an instructor from your preferred school and the instructor
takes in to account one's capabilities, they very well might then tailor a
dog if they can depending on your needs.

Yes a big decision, but time to put in an application or two.

Cheers.

Brent.

Madison, you have been hanging around for years gathering information. I
have a sense there is a lot of fear and uncertainty that you are dealing
with . We are glad to answer questions -and will continue to do so. Maybe
you should just apply at some schools and then dialog with them on some of
your questions. They can give you information from their perspective. This
might help in your information gathering.
