[NAGDU] GDB/Leader Dogs O&M programs

Joy,

Which hearing aids have you found to be most useful? I am auditioning
Oticon Real aids. They're awfully expensive and not especially helpful for
my particular hearing loss. I'm considering one of the over-the-counter
Lexie units which would save much money, but I wouldn't have the same
support from a local audiologist.

I will appreciate any perspectives.

Best,

Richard

Hi Tracy, Is your husband experiencing hearing loss? I found that I don't
hear the sounds in upper ranged frequencies as well as I used to and that
impacts my ability to properly evaluate spatial orientation. I have a pair
of hearing aids which help with this issue. Even without hearing aids, an
O&M professional could give pointers on alternative ways to pick up on
orientation indicators. Just a suggestion. I swear, I'm not getting old, but
my body has changed over the years and I am determine to make that a change
and not a barrier.

Hi Deanna.
I see you just answered the question I sent, but I'll ask another. What
kinds of things did you work on?
I showed my husband how to use a cane many years ago, and he goes all over,
but now that his vision has gotten a lot worse he's having some problems
with orientation. I think he could benefit from some professional training,
though I can't convince him yet.
Tracy

Hi Madison,
I attended the Guide Dogs for the Blind O&M Immersion Program in September
2022. It was a great experience and helped me a lot with my cane skills, and
strengthened other mobility skills that would help me become a better guide
dog user as well. I was in the one-week program and stayed at the dorms in
San Rafael, California. I know they just started offering the OMI
(Orientation and Mobility Immersion) Program as a two-week on campus program
now, which is great! I was still working my second guide dog, Mambo at the
time, but he was nearing his retirement. During the training, Mambo stayed
with his puppy raiser who lived within driving distance from campus. If he
didn't stay at home, or with his puppy raiser, he was welcome to stay with
me in the dorms and spend time during my training with staff members.
Overall, the program was great and very beneficial. Please write me off-list
if you have any specific questions or anything.
Deanna and Martin (my newest guide dog)
