Got this from the big animal hospital in New York, and thought it might be useful to people.

Each winter, AMC’s 24/7 ER sees a spike in cases of dogs becoming sick after ingesting air-activated disposable hand warmers. These pouches contain elemental iron, which can be toxic to pets (and people) if ingested.

If your dog swallows one of the pouches intact, it also can cause an intestinal blockage and require surgery to remove it. Keep these items away from pets and throw them away in a pet-proof trash can.

If your pet ingests a hand (or foot) warmer, call ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center at 1-888-426-4435 (fee applies), Pet Poison Helpline at 1-855-764-7661 (fee applies), or bring your pet to your local veterinary ER. Join us on Thursday, March 14th at 6pm ET, as we welcome animal behavior expert Dr. Mikel Maria Delgado to discuss her new book, "Play With Your Cat!: The Essential Guide to Interactive Play for a Happier, Healthier Feline." While millions of American households have at least one feline family member, cats continue to be misunderstood by their owners. Dr. Delgado addresses this gap, exploring how a lack of interactive play can lead to boredom, frustration, and health issues in cats. Using an evidence-based approach and the latest scientific research, Dr. Delgado offers practical techniques for engaging cats in play, demonstrating the vital role it plays in their well-being and in resolving behavioral issues.

Our latest webinar is now available to watch online! Pets with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) often experience recurrent issues such as vomiting and diarrhea due to chronic inflammation of the digestive tract. To make matters more difficult, the underlying cause of IBD is unknown.

Tune in as Dr. Douglas Palma, Specialist in Internal Medicine and Department Head of Internal Medicine at the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center, discusses the diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory bowel disease in dogs and cats. While finding the best course of treatment may involve some trial and error, most pets can have a good quality of life once the disease is managed properly. Click the link below to watch now!
