I had issues with Krokus from the beginning, but we were able to work together for about 7 years.  He was always a bit slow for me, and he was a terrible scavenger.  
I felt like people hadn't really listened to my concerns when I was in class with him, so, when I returned to TSE, I wrote a letter detailing my lifestyle and what I want in a dog, as I always do, and I made a big deal of asking my trainers if they'd read it before I got matched.  I was a squeaky wheel about it.  I don't know if it helped or not, but Igloo is a great match for me, and I felt like my training team took any concerns I had seriously.  
I think being vocal about concerns helps, but it helps to get trainers who will listen, and I don't know any way to guarantee that.
