Hi, I am 73, retired, and almost full time babysitter of my 1.5 year old grandson. July 2023 I just got my first guide dog from Guide Dogs for the Blind in Calif. I used a long cane for decades before this. I get a lot of rides from my husband who is also retired. But I also like to go places on bus or paratransit on my own when my husband is busy.
Now that I have the dog, I try to walk her (and I mean longer walks of at least a mile or more) twice a day with shorter walk in between. But the past 2 months she hasn't been walked as much as I would like because I had to have foot surgery and my old knee injury is acting up. But usually with my knee brace on I can walk her at least a mile. She goes to a lot of doctor appointments and loves to go shopping especially at grocery stores! When I was at at GDB getting dog training, they told us the oldest person they matched with a guide dog was in her 90s! But when they evaluated me at home to see if I qualified for a dog, I had to give them a list of at least 3 places where I walk at least half a mile.and then they made me walk with my cane for half a mile and then with Juno for half a mile.
I don't know how that compares with other guide schools
Good luck
debbie.

Do people who are homemakers qualify to get guide dogs or guide horses?
Because that is what I am, a homemaker. I live in a rural town, the nearest city is about an hour drive away and I have a farely large yard in back of my house that is partially fenced in.
