the Virtual Parent Support Group Chicago Lighthouse for the Blind *
APH FamilyConnect and the Chicago Lighthouse are pleased to offer this
virtual support group for parents and families of children who are blind or
visually impaired. These monthly sessions are for families to connect
with and learn from each other about the joys, challenges, and adventures
of raising children with visual impairments and blindness.  These sessions
are open to families. No ACVREP or professional development credits will be
available.

Around: Principles and Skills of Active Travel for Students with a Visual
Impairment Part 1 *
Obtaining a driver’s license is a recognized symbol of independence for
young adults in this nation. When a visual impairment is present, this
symbol of independence may be a city bus pass or a contract with a hired
driver. Instruction is essential in building skills needed to access
transportation effectively and to manage adult responsibilities. Developing
positive self-esteem as an active traveler and recognizing the inner
satisfaction of gaining personal independence are larger goals within
instruction. This presentation draws from the curriculum Finding Wheels
(Corn & Rosenblum, 2020) and personal experience in accessing
transportation as an active traveler.

2020) and personal experience in accessing transportation as an active
traveler. We will continue to learn what families and professionals can do
to support students to develop independent traveler skills.
