Dear NCABS members and leaders,

   I got the following mesage from leaders of our state affiliate, and they told me that it is vital that students in North Carolina read it. Once you read it, you'll realize why.

Your President,

Justin

Subject: Public hearing and Residential School Survey for Immediate Attention

Hello,

This email is being sent to you as a chapter president of the NFB of North Carolina. As you are probably aware,a decision must be made by January 15, 2012 as to which of the three residential schools will close. This is referring to the NC Schools for the Deaf located in Morganton and Wilson as well as The Governor Morehead School for the Blind in Raleigh, NC. The Department of Public Instruction is conducting a survey to seek public input as to which school to close. Attached to this email you will find two files which contain sample answers which you can use as guidance as you fill out this survey.

There is also one more public hearing to be held next week In Raleigh. Time and location are listed below.

Wednesday, Sept. 28

* Council Chamber, Room 201

Avery C. Upchurch Government Complex

222 West Hargett Street, Raleigh

Interpreters will be provided at each hearing. Citizens wishing to speak will be allowed to sign up immediately prior to the beginning of the hearing. To allow as many people as possible to speak, each speaker will be allowed three minutes. For those who do not get to speak due to time constraints, comments can still be submitted through the online survey at:

http://ncdpiecd.inquisiteasp.com/cgi-bin/qwebcorporate.dll?idx=DK3H8G

Comments will be received through September 30, 2011. We need attendance at the public hearing, but if you are unable to attend please do your part by filling out the survey. Please help us by spreading the word to your chapter members, friends, relatives and any one else that you think could help us express our views as blind consumers who are concerned about the free, appropriate education for all blind children.

Johnna Simmons
