NCDPI SEEKS COMMENTS ON RESIDENTIAL SCHOOLS FOR
DEAF AND BLIND STUDENTS
The NC Department of Public Instruction was directed by the 2011
General Assembly to make recommendations to close one residential
school and consolidate services at the remaining two residential
schools. The Department is required to report its recommendations to
the Joint Legislative Education Oversight Committee by Jan. 15, 2012.

The three current residential schools are:

•the NC School for the Deaf (located in Morganton);
•the Governor Morehead School for the Blind (located in Raleigh); and
•the Eastern NC School for the Deaf (located in Wilson).
A total of approximately 220 students are served by the residential schools.

On June 1, 2011, the residential schools were transferred from the NC
Department of Health and Human Services to the NC Department of Public
Instruction. Shortly after, legislation was approved directing the
Department to recommend the closure of one campus.

In order to help in the decision-making process, NCDPI leaders are
seeking input from the public. North Carolinians are invited to take a
brief online survey to provide their views and input on the decision
to close a campus. The deadline to complete the survey is Sept. 30.
