To all our friends, parents, teachers, staff, and supporters of the
blind and visually impaired,
You are invited to attend the presentation of a Proclamation by
Raleigh Mayor Nancy McFarlane, recognizing October 15, 2013, as White
Cane Day, encouraging all of us to pause and reflect on the impressive
accomplishments of the blind and visually impaired.
This will take place at 1:00, October 15, in the City Council
Chambers, 222 West Hargett Street, Raleigh, NC 27601. Following this
brief presentation, the City Council will continue their regular
meeting. You may stay or leave as your schedule and interests dictate.
Earlier that morning, the Governor Morehead School for the Blind and
the Wake Young Women's Leadership Academy will be hosting a student
assembly from 9:45 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. in the auditorium at Lineberry
Hall, 303 Ashe Ave Raleigh, NC 27606 to celebrate White Cane Day. It
would be a pleasure to have you there as well.
On October 6, 1964, a joint resolution of the US Congress was signed
into law authorizing the President of the United States to proclaim
October 15 of each year as White Cane Safety Day.
Your presence at these events would be appreciated, and would help
advance the objective of full social and economic integration of the
blind and visually impaired.
I also encourage you to invite others who have an interest. The
chambers are large, and overflow crowds would be welcome.
Arrive early and enjoy the proceedings. We hope you can make it!
