NATIONAL FEDERATION OF THE BLIND OF NEBRASKA SENIOR DIVISION SECRETARY's REPORT
Monday, January 13, 2020
The NFBN Senior Division met by telephone conference Monday, January
13, 2020. In the absence of President Robert Newman, Vice President
Barbara Loos facilitated the meeting. She called the meeting to order
at 7:07 PM CST. Members present were: Vice President Barbara Boos,
Secretary Linda Mentink, Treasurer Cheryl Livingston, Board Member
Nancy Oltman, Chris Boone, Geralyn Konruff, Brad Loos, Steve
Senteney, and Jerry Whitlow. The only guest present was Jo Boshart.
Nancy recited the NFB Pledge. Brad will recite it next month.
We listened to a described video done by the Colorado Center for the
Blind called Blind Seniors Can Live the Lives They Want. This led to
a discussion about music being too loud on videos and movies, cooking
mistakes and getting burned, and the plan for the first video for
Cameo Rogers and the activities directors. It would be a good video
to show to staff at residential places where blind seniors live.
Linda read the December 2019 Secretary's Report. It will be made a
part of the record of the organization.
Cheryl read the Treasurer's Report as follows:
Treasurer's Report Senior Division

Deposits
Ending Balance 1169.83
Respectfully submitted,
Cheryl Livingston, Treasurer
It will be made a part of the financial record of the organization.
Barbara summarized the NFBN Board meeting, which took place the 11th,
by listing the upcoming events and pertinent information as follows:
Washington Seminar begins February 10. Monday, February 17, at 8:00
PM, there will be a conference call about possibly having a
roundtable with educators concerning getting Braille taught more
consistently in Nebraska schools, with the hope of strengthening the
legislation about teaching Braille. Legislative Day will be
Wednesday, February 19, at 7:45 AM at the Capitol. We will talk to
our state letislators, mainly concentrating on our Blind Parents'
Rights Bill, LB-17. Our 2020 BELL Academy will take place at the
University of Nebraska-Kearney potentially between June 7 and 17,
coordinated by Kimberly Sherbarth. Because we're doing a residential
one, it will be for ages 8-12. The theme is Music, Movement and
Mathematics. There is no plan for Nebraska-sponsored transportation
to the National Convention July 14-19. Our state convention will be
October 22-25 at the Sherraton Hotel in Omaha. It will be our 50th
anniversary since the expansion of our organization in 1971. Former
Nebraskans will be invited. There will also be a leadership retreat
April 17-19 at Calvin Crest.
Topics: Robert is working on contacting someone from AARP, Mike
Friedholm of the Living History Committee, and a low vision specialist.
BRAGS AND DRAGS. Cheryl's brag is that she is going to be retiring
from her position at the Nebraska Commission for the Blind effective March 27.
Barbars brag is that she just got a new Windows 10 computer, so
she'll be learning that very soon.
Jo's brag is that she got her stair lift in last week. Her cat Agnes'
birthday party will be January 25.
Brad and Barbara celebrated their 16th anniversary December 27.
There was no further business, so we adjourned at 8:38 PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Linda Mentink, Secretary
