Good morning NFB of NY. Cheryl Echevarria here from Long Island.
I am also the President of the NFB Travel & Tourism Division, a proud division of the National Federation of the Blind, which this year, we are having our 13th Anniversary, which if you are Jewish or born on the 13th like myself, that is a very lucky number. Our meeting will be held at the 74th National Convention in Orlando, FL on July 3rd from 1-4:30 pm. Besides the main business meeting and elections. We have guest speakers from the travel industry and one persons name you will all recognize from the NFB as well:
Mr. Mark Riccobono, Executive Director, Jernigan InstituteMs. Cathy Vazquez, Access Manager, Norwegian Cruise LinesMr. Andrew Garnett, Special Needs at SeaMr. Patrick Keyes, Statler Center
Registration starts at 1pm, meeting starts promptly at 1:30pm, we ask even if you are just visiting please register, if you are joining or renewing it is $10. We will have someone taking cash and debit cards, please, exact amount, hard to run around to get change at convention.
The division is looking for you, we need members to grow the division. No this is not a group of travel agents, or people working in the travel industry, and we are not just about leisure travel. Our division wants to achieve equality, opportunity and security for the blind in all things in the travel realm.
We work with people seeking to work the travel industry; as either travel agents, or to work with such suppliers as a hotel, resort, cruise line, or maybe tour operators, that means education. The travel industry whether you just travel, advocate, or work in it, is over a multi-trillion dollar and there is a lot of opportunities for the blind.
The purpose of the National Federation of the Blind Travel & Tourism Division is to aid the National Federation of the Blind. It is to serve as a vehicle for collective action by the blind of the nation. This division functions as a mechanism through which all interested blind and sighted persons can come together to plan and execute programs that improve the quality of life and travel for the blind. We promote vocational, cultural and social advancement of the blind; to achieve integration of the blind into society on the basis of equality with the sighted; to focus attention upon accessibility and problems facing blind travelers, to educate blind people interested in the travel and tourism industry; and to take any other action necessary to improve the overall condition and standard of living of the blind.
We hope you can come and learn about this great division, and maybe join us as well.
Thank you my NFB of NY Family
See you all soon.
Cheryl

The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles between blind people and our dreams. You can have the life you want; blindness is not what holds you back.
