Join Nefertiti and Chancey in conversation with Dr. Mona Minkara, winner of
the 2019 Holman Prize for Blind Ambition. Mona conceived and produced
Planes, Trains and Canes, a Youtube documentary that captures her
experience as an independent blind traveler exploring London, Tokyo and
other cities around the world. Join us to hear Mona's perspective on the
diverse cultural responses to blindness she encountered, the affordances
and limitations of technology, and more. We'll include time for you to ask
Mona your own questions.

About Mona: Mona Minkara is one of the only blind professors in the field
of Bioengineering. Currently, she is an Assistant Professor at Northeastern
University. She lost her vision at the young age of seven as a result of
macular degeneration and cone-rod dystrophy. She pursued a Bachelor’s
degree in Chemistry and Middle Eastern studies at Wellesley college. In
2015, she received her PhD in Chemistry from the University of Florida.
Mona then joined the research group of Dr. J. Ilja Siepmann at the
University of Minnesota where her research focus shifted to studies of
surfactants using Monte Carlo methods.

She now studies surfactants found within the lungs and leverages that
knowledge to conduct research related to COVID-19.

Mona is an advocate for blind and visually impaired individuals.

In 2019 she was awarded the Holman Prize along with two other fellow
adventurers. Mona created Planes Trains and Canes, a mini documentary
series featured on her YouTube channel. Mona takes you on a journey to five
different cities around the world showing people what it’s like for a blind
person to travel independently using only public transportation.
