Our names are Jazmin Collins and Crescentia Jung. We are PhD students in the Enhancing Ability Lab and the Virtual Embodiment Lab at Cornell University. Our lab is currently conducting a research study on improving the accessibility of social virtual reality (VR) platforms for people with visual impairments. We are contacting you to see if you would be interested in participating in this study!
The study will be conducted on our campus at Cornell Tech, located on Roosevelt Island in New York City. This is an in-person study, so participants will schedule a 90-minute time slot to come to our campus to complete the study session.
During the session, participants will interact with a VR prototype to assess accessibility enhancements. The prototype will run on a Meta Quest 2, a VR headset with a handheld controller. Participants will wear this VR headset and explore several virtual scenes with a virtual guide. You will then be asked to complete an interview about your experience.
Participants must:
* Be at least 18 years old
* Have a visual impairment (low vision/blindness)
* Be able/willing to travel to the Cornell Tech NYC campus on Roosevelt Island (located at 2 W Loop Rd, New York, NY 10044) for an in-person study
Participants who have the following are unable to participate in our study according to the Meta Quest Health and Safety Guidelines:
* History of seizures, severe dizziness, eye or muscle twitching, or blackouts in response to flashing lights or patterns
* Pregnant
* Current heart conditions
* Current medical conditions requiring the use of implanted electronic medical devices (e.g., pacemakers)
* Other medical conditions impairing sense of motion or balance
If you meet our criteria and the above risks of discomfort do not apply, please sign up for a study session through this Calendly link. <https://tinyurl.com/vr-guide> https://tinyurl.com/vr-guide
We will call the phone number you provide on Calendly for a screening call before the study.
Participants will be compensated $50 for completing the study. We also offer up to $30 total reimbursement for travel expenses upon presentation of receipts.
Please respond to this email if you have any questions. We look forward to hearing from you and working with you to improve the accessibility of VR!
Best Regards,
