[NFB-Blind-Crafters] Swatch

I mark 4 inches with a safety pin at the beginning and the end of the 4 inch mark.  Then I can stretch the fabric a bit to help me find the count between the pins of the 4 inch swatch.  Since the actual 4 inches is marked with the safety pin it then doesn’t matter how I stretch the swatch out of shape to be able to make the count.

I have a needle sizer that has a cut out area that is a verticle line and a horizontal line. Each opening is 2 inches. I lay my swatch on a table, place these oenings over the front side of the swatch and use the tip of a needle to run across a row or up rows allowing the needle feel the hole in each stitch as I count them. I do this three or four times to make sure I am counting accurately and then divide by two or multiply by two if the gauge is given as a four by four.

She said that a swatch needs to be measured on the center 4 inches, not the whole thing.  I didn’t know that.  I think it might be hard for me to measure in the center and count the stitches, unless I measure right by the needle, and that might throw the length off.  I’ll try it when I get farther along, since I’ve cast on now.

I wasn’t getting gauge, but I like my fabric with the needle I’m using, so she helped me figure out that, if I make the next smaller size with my biggerstitches, I’ll get the right size.  Yay, and whew!
