I don't have much practice writing out patterns so hope this is helpful. If you find mistakes, let me know and I'll try to correct them.

GRANNY SQUARE INSTRUCTIONS

MATERIALS: 4-ply yarn and comparable sized crochet hook (I prefer an H). You will need stitch markers to help you keep your place, scissors and a tape measure.

Explanatory Note: Each round of the square is begun before you reach the fourth  corner. For example, the second round is closed with a sl st between the two sets of 3 dc on the fourth side of the square.

To begin, create a slip knot and place it on your hook. Chain 5 and sl st into the original slip knot to form a ring.

Round 1: Ch3 (counts as first dc). 2 dc into the center of the ring. * Ch 3 to form first corner, 3 dc into the ring*; repeat from * to * twice more to complete 4 sides of the square.

To close the square and create the fourth corner, Ch3 and sl st into top of first ch3 space. Sl st between the 2 dc's and once more into the ch3 space. Insert a stitch marker to indicate this as fourth corner.

Round 2: Ch3, (counts as first dc). 2 dc in corner where you have the stitch marker. Ch3, 3 dc in same corner. You have completed the first corner of the second round.

*Move to next corner from prior round; 3 dc, ch3, 3 dc*. Repeat twice more to get to final corner of the round. Your yarn is between two clusters of 3 dc's. Sl st into top of ch3, then after the next two dc's. Your hook should now be in position to begin the next round. Move your stitch marker to indicate beginning of round 3.

Round 3:  Ch3, (counts as first dc). 2 dc in corner where you have the stitch marker. Ch3, 3 dc in same corner. You have completed the first corner of round 3. *3 dc between clusters of dc on previous round*; repeat from * to *. Ch 3 in corner and turn. Second 3 dc in corner. 3 dc between cluster on previous round and in third corner. *3 dc between clusters of dc on previous round*; repeat from * to *. Ch 3 in corner and turn. 3 dc in both clusters from previous round. As you approach fourth corner, sl st in top of ch3 which began this round. Sl st following the dc then once more into the corner ch3-space. Be sure to move your stitch marker to indicate beginning of round 4.

Continue the pattern for three more rounds. Cut yarn and pull through final stitch. Weave in end.
