[NFB-Braille-Discussion] UEB and italics

Hi,

I don't have experience with Down Syndrom specifically, but my typical 3YO is learning braille now so I would be happy to talk about that with you anytime. I'm at allisonh at benetech.org.

I'd start with encouraging her to touch and name different textures. You can turn it into a matching or sorting activity, or play hide and seek or Memory with different textured items. If she's reluctant to touch, that's normal and okay. That's why we work on it. Try to do messy tactile play like with dry rice, pasta, pudding, oatmeal, etc. Practice finding little objects within the messy substances. Let her scribble on a Perkins and teacher about its parts. Think of that like sighted kids playing with crayons. Braille her name for her and stick it on as many objects and surfaces as possible. If she peels it off, that's okay and also very normal. Kids just like peeling things. But exposing her to her name in braille is valuable, even if you have to re-braille it a lot. Add braille to any toys she likes as well. Make braille letters out of snacks, my daughter likes using gold fish crackers, cheese balls, blueberries, grapes, marshmellows, etc. You can use them to make braille letters, and then eat them after. Some people do tennis balls in a muffin tin to represent a braille cell, that's never been my daughter's thing, but a lot of kids like it. Braille Buzz is a cool braille learning toy that a lot of young kids like. Play a game where she has to recognize her name in a list of full cells, then out of a list of other names. Those are just a few things that come to mind for early braille learners.

The pathstoliteracy.org site has some good ideas as well. As well as the National Organization for Parents of Blind Children group on Facebook.

Best,
Allison

I would recommend that you find things that interest the person and begin there. It really depends on their ability to learn to read.

We have had some students with intellectual disabilities in some of our BELL programs, and they have learned some braille. Just as with other children, they learn best the things they are interested in, and there is no reason they can't learn as much braille as they are able to absorb.

What is some advice you would give on how to teach a child with visual Impairment and other disabilities braille? Has any taught a blind child with down syndrome? I'm asking because I'm studying to be a para educator of infants, toddlers, an preschoolers with visual Impairments. Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android

Can someone please explain UEB rules around emphasis marks - italics? I sometimes see a dot 3 after a 4 6, is that an error, is that normal, or does it vary?

Thanks,
Allison
