[NFB-Braille-Discussion] Introduction: Robert Jaquiss

Has anybody seen anything coming out of the company Tactus Technology, or anything similar to what I’m about to write about?

Their claim to fame is the invention of deformable plastics through what they call (I hope I’m getting this name right) “micro-channel fluidics”. That’s a fancy way of saying that the surface of a cell phone, or a tablet (any device that incorporates their “glass”, or “surface”) can be programmatically raised. From being flat, as in a usual tablet or phone, the surface can be pushed out to create “bumps” or “shapes”.

If such a surface was built so that bumps small enough, and in the correct configuration, could be pushed out (e.g., maybe a millimeter, or some small measurement as this) then it’s conceivable that a series of dots, in other words Braille, could be implemented on a tablet. Of course this feature would be off by default, and only turned on by people that needed it. Thus, you’d have a reading tablet. Then you wouldn’t have to have a separate Braille display, and you wouldn’t need an electro-mechanical device such as the Canute which cost $2500. You’d just have a tablet like everyone else.

When I saw this discussion thread, I went to Tactus’s website. Several years ago I wrote to them asking if their product could be used for Braille. They replied that they were considering it, but I haven’t heard anything of late.

Yes, scroll forward and back is possible on the Canute.

Multi-lines and ability to go back and forth (up or down?) easily is a
clear benefit of the Canute and this will have principal benefits for STEM
content and music braille.
