[NFB-Braille-Discussion] getting books Brailled

Hi all

This is just a question and a few observations about this topic.

I’ve often wondered what people do for Braille production when they want hardcopy braille but they’re out of school and the resources they once had access to are gone? Do they turn to private transcribers? And are there a lot of people that do that sort of thing?

>From the transcriber’s point of view, I think this wouldn’t be an inexpensive job to get involved in. You’d need a good braille printer, braille transcriber software such as Duxbury (or else you write your own software if you’re good enough to do that), and then you have to have some sort of high speed scanner to scan the book. And then there’s the matter of getting the book, but I suppose the person making the request provides you that.

So are there a lot of people that do this privately? And is it expensive to have hardcopy braille produced? I’m going to guess the answer is yes.

I ask this partly because I read Braille and would like to get pleasure books to read. NLS has some available, but it’s a limited supply of hardcopy, even electronic Braille. I just figured with the expenses I mention above, that the cost to the individual to get a Braille book would be pretty high because the private transcriber would have to charge a lot to makeup for his or her expenses. Even getting electronic Braille files might be expensive if the transcriber had to manually edit the book being transcribed.

If you have any thoughts, let me know.

Try Erin at whistlererin at gmail.com. She's a transcriber whom I've worked with. She's great.

Best,
Allison

Hi all,
I hope this is appropriate for this list, sorry if it's not. I have some print books that I'd really like to read, but I can't find anywhere that has them in hardcopy Braille. I know people are going to say look for them as audio books, but Braille is my preference, so I don't want to hear any such comments. I've tried reading electronic Braille, but I don't care for it. Does anyone know of anywhere where I could send books to get Brailled? Now that I'm no longer in school the place that used to produce all of my schoolwork and did a couple of pleasure books for me can't help us anymore. If no one knows of anywhere then that's okay, I just thought I'd ask on hear. Thanks for any help/suggestions anyone can provide me!!!!
Madison
