[NFB-Braille-Discussion] still working on the reader

Ken,

If you have the HumanWare version of the eReader, auto-scroll is started with the SPACE key and dots 3-4. Try that from within a document and see if that works. If it does not work, you may have the other version of the eReader, and my experiences won't help. Your library contact should also know which version you have.

I don't remember getting a thumb drive with ours, so you might need to check on whether that drive contains any update software. However, I agree with you that 100K is probably pretty small for a software update.

Anything we would tell you would be a guess without knowing for sure which version of the reader you have. In addition, you might find more people who have the eReader on the eReader list for beta testers. I am not on that list so do not have the subscription information, but your library would have it. Let us know what happens.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

Hi list the auto scroll is what my user manual said the 4 6 together with the space bar. I had heard some complaints that the manual doesn't explain some things clearly like for example apparently you must use computer braille when logging onto a network. I have it paired with my Iphone and had entered passwords other places using UEB like when I configured the team talk client on my iPhone. Had also tested it on the computer. Like I had said our director of our liberary supposedly sent me an update of the firmware on a thumb drive. The drive appears to be blank. What I actually did and I was going to test this anyway I went to newsline on the computer, found the downloadable BRF file, got it and plugged the thumbdrive into my computer. Then went to my downloads folder, grabbed the file, CTRL X went to the drive and pasted it. It read correctly when I had done this the computer said, "associated press national for... then plugged the drive into the reader and the file correctly uploaded to my book list. I'm sure the manual said auto scroll was the 4 6 sign together with the space bar. But at least I know the file read correctly. As for getting online and that's my issue. Our network password has two stars in it.I have licked that issue by learning the correct braille sign for a star both in UEB and computer braille. No matter what I do reader says could not connect could not connect. It doesn't say wrong password I'm sure it's a software update. Newsline doesn't show in online services. Mine was one of the very first readers to be issued. During our state convention our director of our library called me asking me if I'd like to be a beta tester. Of course I would, I'm big on braille Huh? Really have put the reader through it's paces. We did have one user have this problem and she sent her reader back. I'm pretty sure it needs an update because everything else on the reader works flawlessly also once I thought I had gotten it online when it said it was downloading an update and I can't remember now what I did different. I'm almost sure I have a blank thumbdrive that is labeled E reader but has nothing on it. There is only about 100 KB used space of a 1.85 GB drive. I would think any software would be bigger than that Huh? Is there any place online to get the firmware update so I can get it to the drive manually and to the reader that way? Also does it have to be installed to a specific folder? Supposedly you have to do that with talking books then you unzip.

Hi braille users ken here. Still working on trying to get my NLS braille reader online. This morning I tested downloading the beta of a BRF file of a paper on newsline by downloading it to the computer and moving it to a flash drive. When I moved it the devices and drives only shows one item on the drive. Even though the drive is labeled ?ereader. So assuming there is an update to the software there on the drive, how do I tell the reader to look and see there is an update. My properties show used space on the drive. If there isn?t actually a piece of software there and the drive is labeled Ereader with nothing actually there, can I downloa the updated software to my computer and get it to the reader that way? BTW on that beta file, I couldn?t get the reader to auto scroll. I hit the 4-6 sign together with the space bar and nothing happened. Sure don?t want to sit there mashing buttons when reading Huh? d

Hello,
I have several decks of braille playing cards. However, only one corner has braille on it. I used to be able to find some with two corners brailled, but I can?t seem to find them now, so I?m considering taking a deck I already have and brailling the other corner. However, I have found that lining the cards up in the Perkins brailler is a bit tricky, so I am looking for recommendations on the best way to do this. Would a slate be the better way to accomplish this?

Try Braille Superstore; the have a standard deck of Braille playing
cards brailled on both corners.

I use a slate and stylus, then braille the back of the card rather
than the front.

I always use a slate to Braille cards. I slide the card in the slate so that it bumps up to the two right-hand pins. This way you don't get the pin holes, but the card is lined up straight.

If you don't want to Braille your own cards, you can buy two different styles of Braille playing cards from the NFB Independence Market (410-659-9314, extension 2216).

Cordially,

Ellen

Ken, are you talking about the every-reader pilot? I have the one made by humanware, and it looks to me as though it only reads BARD books and newsline materials. BARD braille downloads easily; newsline is a little different, but I think it also works. Were you not given a library contact and a User Guide? The user guide in the device is also very useful.
Good luck,

Ken,

Which eReader do you have? If you have the one made by HumanWare, some of the key combinations you mentioned do not seem correct. It is worth getting familiar with the User Manual on the eReader itself.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

Hi braille users ken here. Still working on trying to get my NLS braille reader online. This morning I tested downloading the beta of a BRF file of a paper on newsline by downloading it to the computer and moving it to a flash drive. When I moved it the devices and drives only shows one item on the drive. Even though the drive is labeled "ereader. So assuming there is an update to the software there on the drive, how do I tell the reader to look and see there is an update. My properties show used space on the drive. If there isn't actually a piece of software there and the drive is labeled Ereader with nothing actually there, can I downloa the updated software to my computer and get it to the reader that way? BTW on that beta file, I couldn't get the reader to auto scroll. I hit the 4-6 sign together with the space bar and nothing happened. Sure don't want to sit there mashing buttons when reading Huh? d

Does anyone how I can learn music Braille cheaply. I know literary Braille and I could read music visually when I could see, but no familiarity with music Braille. How can I learn it most easily and cheaply?

Thanks,
Anna

Does that free online braille school in Australia offer music braille? I
forgot what they are called. But you might also check with NLS for braille
books teaching music braille.

It sucks that Hadley doesn't have music Braille class anymore! Right now I'm taking contracted Braille through Hadley and that's a really good the class.
