Ken:
I don't know which Braille reader you are using. The NLS machine probably is not ideal for teaching Braille. My recommendation would be to buy a learning Braille book such as the McDuffy Reader from Independence Market and leave it at her house, especially if she will work on it between visits with you orline or live. You may also need a copy. NLS or Bookshare may have a beginning Braille book, you would have to find it, unless somebody on this list can tell you. You can check with the NFB training centers to see what they are using.
Best,
Ramona

I want to help a friend with her braille I’ve been in touch with NFB and have been waiting for an email with a document on it that I can use on the reader.  I really can’t lug hard copy with me to her home in Princeton junction NJ. I need to evaluate what she knows and doesn’t know about braille. The real issue is her ability to recognize the dot placements. I thought there was a way to create a document on the reader itself I thought it had a document manager but don’t see it.  I can type into notepad a document that could be used for the letter identification but I want to know what she knows or doesn’t know about the contracted braille how can I create a document with a computer that will simulate the contractions. Can it be done.  This is 50 years after the fact since the new York institute for the blind didn’t have the good sense to teach her braille.
