In my experience with working with in the deaf blind division
and consulting with other groups within NFB. If there is somebody who
cannot hear the proceedings of the conference call there hearing may
be at a point for them to use TTY( telecommunications device for the
deaf) or a Tela Braille sensor (telecommunications device for the deaf/
blind. If this is so, most people use a relay operator who can
interact with those of use who can hear. The best advice is that if
this occurs four things are critical. One, everyone talk just a
little slower then they would normally talk as well as be clear.
Second one person at a time needs to be talking. Three, time should
be allowed for the operator to give a response to the individual.
Four, each person should state their name every time that they talk in
the meeting allowing the operator to tell the difference between each
individual. On another note be aware that if a relay operator is in
use allow for an extra 20-30 minutes in the meeting, because it takes
time to make sure that all the information is successfully translated
to the deaf/blind individual; also allow for evening more time for
conversations that are very detailed and complex.
