[nfb-db] nfb-db Digest, Vol 55, Issue 4

Randy: Just want to give you all the moral support that you need to rebuild AADB.  We are ALWAYS here for you.  I agree with your statement below 100%. You have touched on the heart of the problem.  There are so many diverse cultures within the Deaf-Blind community as well as within the Blind community. Getting them all to work together is going to create a very unique challenge for all of our leaders whether it is AADB, NFB, NFADB, etc.  We all want to improve the lives of the Deaf-Blind, and we all have our ideas on how best to make it happen. You summed it up very nicely when you said, "it's simply a lack of understanding of each other that is at the heart of the problem." You have hit the nail on the head.

With much admiration and all my support for you.
Tracie Inman

Hi Randy,
I want to say that I feel strongly that each DB person's circumstances
are unique and perhaps changing over time.  We need to use the mode of
language  communication that will allow us the ability to communicate
and express ourselves with ease and without stress or undue hardship
(e.g., eye strain). It is my personal feeling  that those DB, who  use
tactile ASL are just as welcome in the NFB.  However, the we have to
work on the larger NFB to accept the  deaf-blind in all our diversity.

Hi Janice.
I do not own one, but have sene demos done with them and have witnesses people loving them and others hating them. If you're a low vision user, you may like it, but if you are a braille user, you probably will not. Since you asked such a basic question, I'm not quite certain how to help.

At the risk of saying me to, from everything that I know about the android platform is basically what others have said, if your low vision great but if you are totally blind and primarily use braille, the jury is Fars I know anyway is definitely out on this matter. Personally I use an iPhone, because I can understand its speech and am very familiar with his controls. And if I had a Bluetooth braille display things would work out even better I believe. On the computer side of things in case this comes up in the future, both the Apple Macintosh platform and of course Windows have very good braille display access when it comes to braille. I use both the braille display drivers to drive my braille sense classic and the provided braille display driver for windows when using JAWS version 14 running on Windows 8 professional. Of course this is with a few minor tweaks which I would be happy to go into for those who are technically inclined. Hope this helps
sincerely Maurice. Have a great evening all.

Hi Scott,
I am a braille user.  I have some light perception but that's all. I
have a Braille Sense U2 from the NDBEDP which I have been trying to get
trained on. I could not afford the data plan at the time that the NDBEDP
was offering an Iphone.

However, my dad  wants to buy me this phone.  He feels that the blind
should like Linex based application because they are not visually
dependent (I think).  My dad is a mathematician and writes computer
programs for the Navy for radar guidance systems.

Hello Janice,

I was struggling to get out the rain and dropped my phone face first on the cement. I can be a little accident prone sometimes. The screen cracked and it costs the same amount as the phone to fix it! So I am waiting until the nexus 5 comes out soon (October, I think) until I purchase a new one. This time I will get insurance.

Thanks
Christine
