The current technology would be Zoom Text, Windows Eyes, or JAWS.  I do not know if there is other technology available. I do know that Apple Systems such as MAC and ipad have their own zoom and speech output programs.  For myself I would rather have ZoomText or Windows Eyes so that I could adjust the font as big as I need.

Dear List Members,

Thank you so much to those who responded to the second question of our deaf-blind focus group on accessible voting! You provided some great feedback. The elements of an ideal voting environment identified by the focus group participants were:

*       Provide a refreshable Braille display that could be used in conjunction with the audio output of the accessible voting system;

*       Placing the accessible voting system in a quiet place;

*       Vote at home using my own access technology, and;

*       Provide the capability to plug Bluetooth capable hearing aid systems into the audio system of the accessible voting machine.

The third question for our accessible voting focus group is:

*       What types of personal access technology currently available could help bring the ideal voting environment about?

Please provide your response to this question by 12:00 p.m. EST on Wednesday, November 20th. All deaf-blind list members who have voted are welcome and encouraged to participate! If you have any questions, please contact:

Good morning Lou Ann.
First, I apologize for not being able to answer question no. 2, but it
looks like other list members have pretty much covered everything that
I would have covered.
I agree that braille displays are part of the equation, but there is a
lot more to this. Really, I think the same answers for question 2 can
be said for question 3. Bluetooth or inductance loop technology could
also be a consideration, we have that at most MTA kiosks in the NYC
area. I can explain the technology behind it if needed.
I think the use of iDevices is already in the main stream, I recall
reading an article about someone with a physical disability not being
able to leave her home, so some poll workers took an iPad to her
residence and had her fill out the ballot and then print it on a
wireless printer. This could also be an idea for those who are
deaf-blind. Yes, braille displays are connected via Bluetooth, but
once the pairing is established, it's secure as far as I know. Also,
with the newer Bluetooth standard (4.0), there are ways in which to
design the Bluetooth technology that limit how far the signal will
even carry.

I think that short range Bluetooth refreshable braille will be a good thing. I also like Scott?s idea of course of adding in short-range Bluetooth for hearing aid systems that employ about technology. And of course for those older systems and inductance loop makes perfect sense. And as has been stated before better training of poll workers would also be desirable.

Hello,

Yes, I agree that the braille display would be nice along with the blue tooth. However, we have to remember that not everyone have all of those equipments  with their hearing aids or know how to read braille. If we could improve what we currently use would be great. For me personally making sure the sound system is loud enough and speech is clear would be helpful. The built in software need to be active as soon as the ballot is inserted in the the voting machine.

As a voter we have to make sure we are educated about what is on the ballot before election day. This would save time and frustration.

Delcenia

Greetings Lou Ann,

In regards to the third question.  I don't believe we, the NFB, want
special treatment just equal treatment.  I agree with Delcenie, that we  need to
have gone over the ballot before we go to vote.  The technology  used to
accommodate our voting experience should be as human a voice as  possible.  I
don't know if the ear phones will work over the hearing  aids  Some of us
don't own all these new gadgets.

Blessings,

Cheri Fields
