[nfb-db] Florida Support Service Program Training Workshop - Orlando

Thank you, SW! Yes, Maricar would be a great person to talk to at HKNC
about the SSP programs. When I was at HKNC in 2011, I had the opportunity
to go to a American Association for the Deaf Blind (AADB) symposium in
Kentucky. HKNC furnished a SSP to travel with me. There were others in the
group who also had their own SSP.

I loved the freedom of having my own SSP while at the symposium and learned
much about what it meant to be a SSP...one thing that is important is that
the SSP does not make decisions for the Deaf-Blind person, it is up to the
DB person to tell the SSP what they want to do after the SSP feeds them the
visual information that they need to know.

Some states have very small programs and others are in specific areas of the
state and not statewide. Here in Florida we are aiming for statewide
services. I don't' remember if Pennsylvania has a SSP program. I admit I
do know know about Pennsylvania's SSP services but Maricar and HKNC would be
a great resource to find out if they do. HKNC is very involved in each
state that has SSP programs. They make it their priority to stay on top of
what is provided in the states.

Like I said there are only 30 states that have SSP services and some are
only in a small metropolitan area and not statewide. For example, in the
State of Washington they have an excellent SSP program within the Seattle
area but it is not offered statewide.

Marsha,
Every state and city has their own SSP coordinator. The person responsible
for establishing and setting up SSP services in your area differs from state
to state. If you live in PA. I'm pretty sure they have their own SSP
coordinator in your area. I believe you live in Philedalphia. Scott Stoffel,
is an SSP coordinator in another area. I'm not sure if he also the
coordinator of your city. But you can ask him, if you still have his email
address.

HKNC just barely started it's own SSP program. They created an SSP class,
now taught by Maricar. I took her class myself. Marsha you might want to
take her class and learn more about the SSP program.

coordinators around the country, like in other states? There might be a need
to connect all of the coordinators, to have some unity in trainings,
materials, programs and so on.
