Trish, I know you spoke to Janice but here is a link that is on the NFB
website that lists guide dog schools.

https://nfb.org/resource-list-guide-dog-schools

There are many different schools in the country. The important thing is
researching which one is best for you. Some of the schools do not serve
those who have multiple disabilities. Some do not have training for hearing
alerts. There is much to be considered when determining where to go for a
guide dog.

Some other schools are:

Leader Dog in Michigan
Southeastern in Palmetto, Florida
Seeing Eye
Guiding Eyes

There are some in New Jersey, California and so on...I got my first guide
dog from Southeastern in Palmetto, Florida but chose to get my current dog
from Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind in Smithtown on Long Island because
of the training that they provide for those who have combined vision and
hearing loss. I am very satisfied with my new dog. She is absolutely
amazing. She has been trained to alert me when I do not have my hearing
aids on of certain sounds.

It is important to do your homework before making a life-changing decision
of obtaining a guide dog. And from my experience, let me assure you that
you feel the need to contact the schools they are more than happy to answer
your questions.

Have a good day,
Darlene

Janice,
Where would you get a new guide dog? Why does everyone come to Long Island?
Are there other guide dog schools?
Trish

Hi Marsha,
When my life settles down enough for me and they find another guide for me
to train but the earliest I would be free is after the Deaf Blind Camp.

back to the Guide Dog Foundation because I do not think I can afford to pay
her vet bills-including four medicines and special dog food as much as I
love her. It will be heartrenching but I know that with Gods help and my
friends on the DB lists and family I will get through it somehow and accept
the new guide dog.
