Perkins Museum Website Relaunch

New content includes an expanded "People in Perkins History" section, many new photographs, and includes links to primary sources and digital resources organized by topic.

We have an Internet Archive Table Top Scribe!


 



 Two tables support the TT Scribe machine and a computer used to operate it. This fall we ordered our very own table  <http://perkinsarchives.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e6c5162e8795bc5c4f5319809&id=b4224eed81&e=ce8108b558> Top Scribe System from the Internet Archive. This machine will allow us to digitize text in house, quickly and easily. The rapid scanning of bound volumes will help us make even more resources available online. Once captured, the books upload to the  <http://perkinsarchives.us6.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=e6c5162e8795bc5c4f5319809&id=b1f22ab962&e=ce8108b558> Internet Archive platform where they receive the same backend services we received when outsourcing the digitization, including OCR.

A collection of three early embossed Books from 1808, 1811, and circa 1817. The earliest two, printed in Amsterdam and Vienna, are likely the first books for the blind printed outside of the books printed by the Institute for Blind Youth in Paris by Valentin Haüy beginning in 1786.

The Perkins Globe, made by Steven Preston Ruggles in 1837, is probably the first terrestrial globe made for use by the blind in America. This collection includes historic images of the globe, a 1982 report on the analysis of paint samples, a full report on a comprehensive renovation to it 2004, and images of the globe moving in and out of a moving truck for renovation in 2004.

Copy of two letter from Michael Anagnos, Director of the Perkins Institution, to John Albert Macy, regarding the trial held at Perkins regarding Helen Keller and The Frost King plagiarism incident. The letters are dated November 13th and 19th, 1902. At this time Macy was writing a supplementary section on Helen Keller's life and education for her book The Story of My Life published in 1903.

Letter from Alexander Mell, Director of the Imperial Royal Institute for the Education of the Blind, Vienna to Edward E. Allen, Director of Perkins School for the Blind about the first printed books for the blind, and the sale of posters, prints, and books in 1921. Mell also describes how Haüy’s book was flattened during the binding process.

In our last newsletter we talked about our intent to box many of our oldest and most fragile embossed books. All 848 boxes are now on the shelves with book titles, dates, formats and location of publication written on the box spine- complete inventory to follow.
