I was contacted last week by a close friend of Brians' and told that he was
in a hospital in East Germany. He had suffered a brain infection, which was
beginning to improve, and then had a heart attack. Brian had gone to
Medjugorje, which is a place of pilgrimage where the virgin Mary has been
seen. Brian has gone several times and this has been his special place for
spiritual renewal. After the heart attack, he was placed into an induced
coma. I learned yesterday that he was taken out of the coma, but there is no
brain activity. His sister is flying to East Germany to have him removed
from life supports and make final arrangements. Brian has been a very good
friend to me. I have known him as he converted to the Catholic faith. Our
mothers died within two months of each other and we shared our loss. As you
can tell, our relationship has been a close and deep one. Brian loved
working with blind kids and I think he may have still had a couple mobility
students. He was always willing to help whenever needed. He was the leader
of the soccer event for the students in our Summer activity. Please keep
Brian and his family in your thoughts and prayers during this sad and
difficult time. I'll send more information when I receive it.

Dana, I don't think that I ever met Brian, but it sounds like that he was a
tremendous person. I understand your sorrow and pray that you can accept
whatever is his outcome. I am always so impressed to anyone who converts to
the Catholic faith. I know persons like my own mother and Sue who have
become converts and it amazes me so that their faith is so strong. It
sounds like that it is the same for Brian. I thank you for sharing this
with us! Larry

I'll always be thankful to Brian. He was my first mobility instructor when
I moved here for college so many years ago. Without his guidance, I
wouldn't have been able to make it to class that fall term.

I was happy to have the opportunity to connect with him through bell; he
loved working with those kids, even if he could get a little grumpy on the
way home after a long day.

The swep activities will never be the same without him yelling at me for
something, usually being disruptive with the kids. I didn't know him well,
but I'll miss him all the same. He was one of a kind.

Regards,
Tj

This is sad news indeed. Riding in the van was one of my favorite parts of
participating in the Bell Academy. He had a great big heart, and he was
kind. His family will be in my prayers.
