our Cycle for Independence. This guidance should apply to all chapter
fundraisers.

Chris,

I may not have explained myself well, based on your response in the chapter
presidents email list.

 

It sounds like you are talking about how each chapter in your affiliate
contributes to the national organization. Did I understand this correctly?

 

What I am trying to find out is if your affiliate requires each chapter to
give a certain amount to the affiliate each time the chapter does a
fundraiser or receives any donations.

 

Our affiliate currently requires 40%. We have been told that this is
standard across the country.

 

We are looking at other ideas for how the chapters in our state can help
support the programs and other expenses of the affiliate.

Dear NFB Chapter Presidents,

 

I thought I would dip into this conversation. I spent time this past weekend
with our Delaware affiliate and the discussion of the role of chapters was
an important part of the conversation so this is also top of mind for me.

 

We should remember that chapters exist to support the work of the state
affiliate In fact, there is no requirement that an affiliate have any
chapters. The chapters provide a way to connect members at the local level
to the work of the affiliate and the national organization. 

 

Our chapters should be focused on building the affiliate and the national
movement and contributing to those efforts which can have the broadest
effect on the lives of blind people. My experience is that local members can
always think up ways to spend money rather than focusing on why we are
raising funds and what we want that money to do. 

 

An affiliate target is helpful for planning and for helping chapters
benchmark their goals. I would also note that by making it clear that
dollars are being raised to benefit the affiliate of the National Federation
of the Blind it provides a broader justification for why the funds are
needed and who they benefit. In other words, the mechanics of "how" might be
the wrong focus or way for chapters to think about it.
