Annette,

The Options Interchangeable circular needles from KnitPicks come with a key.
There is a small hole in the base of the cable screw that you slide the
key/pin into (one end of the key is bent into a circle so it will not go all
the way through) the hole and then you hold it and use it as a grip to screw
the points on. When the key is in the hole it forms a T or cross that gives
you a better grip on the cable so that you can screw the tips on tight. So
far, I have never had them come loose.

If you happen to own these needles, the key comes in the bag with the cable.
Inside that bag, is a small bag that has two or four end caps and the key.
