Liz:

A few ideas, but not having tried it, you'll have to experiment to see what 
works ...

1.  If you make the length of the I-cord long enough, so it will just go 
over a person's head without having the need of a clasp, you can try a 
3-needle bind off to seam the co edge with the bo edge.  This will mean that 
you'll either have to pick up sts at the co edge or do some type of a 
provisional co so you will have those stitches ready to knit together with 
your bo sts when you get to that point.

Or ...

2.  When you get to the end of the i-cord, reduce your st count to 1 st and 
then start to make a small chain with a crochet hook.  The chain will form a 
small loop if you bring it back on itself to attach to the bo edge.  Than on 
the co edge, sew on a decorative button.

Keys can be pretty heavy, so I think doing a 3-ndl bind off will give more 
strength and stability to this type of item.
