In the past when I was first at the Seeing Eye almost 11 years ago they had
a few ways of getting puppies named. You could make a donation of a
certain amount and it entitled you to name a puppy. The folks/families that
raised the puppies got to name them, but all the puppies in the same litter
was assigned a letter and all puppies in that litter had to have names
beginning with that letter. That part of it is still being done. So all
Wisty's litter mates names begin with a W. I do know that it goes by breed
also. There was a German Sheperd called Walnut in my out going class. None
of her litter mates were in the class with me. She had been ready to go
with a blind person when she was around 23 months old, but was not matched up
with anyone until I came along. They get reassigned to another trainer
and are held at the kennels, but continued to be worked in the training until
matched up. They keep them in training for a little over a year after the
initial guide training and if there is no match they will place these
dogs out in homes. To receive such a dog you need to put your name on a list
and renew it every 6 months. You can put in your choice of breed and sex
of dog and wait to get it.

Now what they said is there is some committee that names the puppies. Not
sure any more about that.
