[Nfb-krafters-korner] lighting candles

I once read a long biography of Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan.  It 
mentioned one incident -- or rather catastrophy -- in which their house 
burned down and had to be rebuilt.  Helen and Anne and her husband lived in 
a house and Helen was home and upstairs when the fire broke out.  I don't 
remember if she got out on her own or had help, but wouldn't be terrifying 
to be both deaf and blind in a fire? and upstairs as well... I do remember 
it saying she smelled smoke and went downstairs herself.
Anyway, so much for fire.

I don't know if I'd call it brave or not.  I first take the match stick
unlit in my right hand and tuch the wick so I can judge the area where I
balance my right hand on the candle container to where the wick is.  Then I
carefully strike the match close to the candle so I won't have far to go,
rest a portion of my right hand on the candle container and tuch the match
stick to the wick.  It is not really hard, but it does take practise and I
have a few rules to go by.

If I have to use more than two matches to lite the candle, leave it for my
husband to lite or use another candle.

If the wick is way down in a container, leave it for my husband or get
another candle.

I was practically raised in our local volunteer fire department all my life
because my dad was one of the founders and in his 40 some odd years with the
department, he has held every position including Chief for 18 years.  I have
a healthy respect, and I do take precautions.  When in doubt, put it out.
