Mary,
Have you ever knit anything before or are you NEW to knitting?
If you are brand new, I suggest you do something smaller than a Prayer Shawl 
to begin with.  You can do a scarf, and use the same stitch that you'll do 
in a prayer shawl, but it is much smaller and not so overwhelming.

You can just cast on 10 - 15 stitches.
Then knit every row, till you get the scarf the length you want it to be. 
Use mid-size needles and a worsted weight yarn for your first project. 
Needles could be size 8 or 9 to begin with.
