I used it along with other yarn, yes.   You can use any type of yarn for the
flowers that you want. Two different textures make them interesting. You'll
deffenetly want 2 different colors though one for the pettals and one for
the center.

Now when you did this hat the fun fur is really thin, did you use it double
on the nifty knitter?
 
I know some folks double a worstered weight yarn to make hats on the nifty
knitter.  I have not made one as I don't want to use it double.  
 
I have heard there are looms out there that have the pegs closer together
that you can use thinner yarn.  Please do tell us a little about what type
of yarn we can use.
