[Nfb-krafters-korner] drivers - transportation

Hi,
Those are great ideas Becky. It made me think, that high schools have
National Honor Society and our school has Spanish Honor society. These would
be good starting points. But no matter how wholesome an idea sounds, it is
up to you to be very careful.

At first, go on short trips to get a feel of how the two of you gel.

Henrietta

Ask your neighbors if they have kids or know good kids to help drive. Ask
your paper boy or girl if they do jobs around and can help you shovel snow.
They may have an older sister who can help you with transportation. Ask at
church your local Lions Club. Get feelers out there. Then talk to the
person and find out there interests. Janice my neighbor will do any sort of
shopping within her own time constraints. She sounds busy, but really
anytime I ask if she wants to go do girl stuff, she is there. Usually I
pick up the lunch bill or put gas in her car. Larry will do anything
medical for us. Molly will do anything artsy with me, but she works and her
hours shift. So on Molly's day off she will go anywhere. You find people
and figure out there nitch of interests.

I also own a car. People get the biggest kick out of driving in our limo.
They tell me it is so funny watching reactions.

Colleges have sororities and fraturnitys who have service projects. Heck
for a bag of grocerys these young people will do anything, smile. Seems to
me colleges student services should have a list of service type groups on
campus.

Don't forget service type clubs at churches for some fine help.

Just throwing out ideas that have worked for me.

Cindy is correct and I think this is a great topic for us to talk about.
I do not consider this as off topic. If you are one of us that just would
like to go to a craft supply store to pick something up or browse how do we

get there. We may have friends, family or paid drivers, but how do you
find that sighted person that will take the time to describe things and
help
you pick out what you have pictured in your mind.

I have to say I did not think about college students. I have gone down
the road of retired folks, but then you are faced with they don't want to
drive too far, they don't drive when it is dark, they show up smelling like
a
beer, you can't see how they are driving, but they just mentioned gee they
did not see that red light, their car sounds like it won't make it around
the block never mind drive you over to the next town, and they show up and
proceed to tell you that their gas tank is bouncing on E. This is some of
what I have run into...

So how do you find a driver? Don't just say put an advertisement in the
paper. How do you determine that person is going to get you there and back

safely. Remembe, some of us can't see a thing so it is hard to make and
judge first impressions.
