Good suggestions Cindy.  I always keep hand cream in my knitting/crocheting
bag.  It seems that when my hands are moisturized, it improves my finger
sensitivity.  

I remember as a kid having to read braille produced on the plastic sheets.
In the summer when it was really hot and your hands got x, it was difficult
to read, so the teachers would have us dip our finger tips in cornstarch.
Some people would also sprinkle the cornstarch over the page.

I don't have calluses so I can't verify this, however, I have done a lot of
work around paper/cardboard and it dries out the hands to the point that
they crack and bleed. Because of this, I am in the habit of using handcreme
all the time. I have noticed that if I am reading braille right after
applying the cream (make sure your hands are thoroughly dry of course) that
I have better sensitivity. Also, if I am drinking a cup of coffee and
warming my fingers on the mug, the braille seems more distinctive.

Let us know if either of these work with your situation.
