[Nfb-krafters-korner] Massive knot in yarn

Hi all:
I have a massive tangled mess of a knot in this skane of yarn I'm working with. I'd say I'm not even half way through and it's becoming nearly impossible to remove. If I cut it out, how  do I continue on? I'm working on the single crochet stitch.
Is it better to roll a skane into a ball before using the yarn?
