Susan, I think place mats is a good idea.  She could make 
matching napkin rings if she wanted to.

I made the rag rug with very thick sticks threaded with heavy 
cotton yarn.  I made a long strip which was about three and a 
half inches wide.  I coiled the strip into an oval shape.  If I 
make another oval I would make several graduated ovals by tieing 
the ends of different length strips together and then sewing the 
ovals together.  The way I did it made it hard to end the strip 
and keep the oval uniform.
