You could also make your strips narrow, say 3 sticks, and make them real
long. You would start the coiling flat about 8 inches and then join as you
coiled the oval flat. With narrow strips, there would not be a lot of bulk
or gathering on the narrow ends of the oval. This worked very well when I
knitted strips and coiled them for oval rugs.
