Sorry it took so long to reply.  We are at a campground now.  We 
are just a few miles from Ed's brother and we plan to stay here 
about 2 weeks.
I can't get my braille note to connect to the wireless internet, 
but I can get it by using a wired connection at the club house.

To answer your question, I think you can take the palm leaves any 
time of year but they are coconut palm so I don't know if they 
grow in Orlando.

Wow that is so cool...is it the kind of palm leaves you can just 
go pick up
down there...I will be there in the summer, but I wonder if they 
are better
during a certain season.
Yeah....smelling someone else's hat...wouldn't be my cup of tea
either...smile...but that is amazing it has no odor.

said it
 doesn't.  He was wearing a hat he said he has had for 12 years.  
He made
 me smell it (yuck) but it did not stink.  Apparently the palm 
doesn't
 absorb odor.  THE color changes from green to a light tan.  He 
says the
 baskets will last at least 40 years.

 texture and the like of the basket.  I know you mentioned palm

 I have to tell you all about my morning.  We were walking down 
the street
 in Key west and a man was sitting on the sidewalk making 
baskets.  We
 stopped and I asked him if he would teach me how to do it.  He 
said he
 charges 40 dollars to teach how to make a basket.  So he taught 
me how to
 make a basket from coconut palm leaves.  He was a nice guy and a 
patient
 teacher.  Of course I was the first blind person he ever taught 
so it was
 a
 challenge for him to verbalize the directions but he did a 
pretty good job
 of it.  I can't say I could make a palm basket by myself now, 
but it was
 fun and I have a pretty good idea of how it is done.  I got to 
keep the
 basket I made and he also gave me a basket and a hat he made.

 I am usually a quiet, introverted person so this was certainly 
out of my
 comfort zone but I am glad I did it.

 P.  S.  I gave him a twenty dollar tip and I think he got some 
free
 advertising.
