[Nfb-krafters-korner] making palm baskets

I wish I could show you the basket. The guy makes a pretty good
living at making them. He told my husband this has been a slow
season but he made fifteen hundred dollars. Ed does not know if
he said that was in a week or a month. In any case that wouldn't
be bad with no overhead.

I would have responded yesterday but my internet has been out
since
Thirsday and they only put it back on today. Something happened
with
the snow and the ice... In any case, this is truly amazing and
what a
golden opportunity! I'm so grateful that you stepped out of that
comfort zone and tried something new and then shared it with us.
I
wish that there were people like him in New Jersey. Perhaps, in
the
summar, there are and I just don't know it! I'll need to check
New
York. Needless to say, I have also been interest in palm baskets
and
would love to learn how to make them. But I've never seen one
and am
quite curious as to the texture as well.

Talk soon,
Eleni

Wow that is so cool...is it the kind of palm leaves you can just
go pick up
down there...I will be there in the summer, but I wonder if they
are better
 during a certain season.
Yeah....smelling someone else's hat...wouldn't be my cup of tea
either...smile...but that is amazing it has no odor.

Theresa, I thought the palm might get brittle after time but he
said it
doesn't. He was wearing a hat he said he has had for 12 years.
He made
me smell it (yuck) but it did not stink. Apparently the palm
doesn't
absorb odor. THE color changes from green to a light tan. He
says the
baskets will last at least 40 years.

Wow that sounds like fun! I think it is awesome! I would love to
know the
texture and the like of the basket. I know you mentioned palm
 leaves...but
do they stay flexible or does it keep its shape?
 Theresa

I have to tell you all about my morning. We were walking down
the street
in Key west and a man was sitting on the sidewalk making
baskets. We
stopped and I asked him if he would teach me how to do it. He
said he
charges 40 dollars to teach how to make a basket. So he taught
me how to
make a basket from coconut palm leaves. He was a nice guy and a
patient
teacher. Of course I was the first blind person he ever taught
so it was
 a
challenge for him to verbalize the directions but he did a
pretty good job
of it. I can't say I could make a palm basket by myself now,
but it was
fun and I have a pretty good idea of how it is done. I got to
keep the
basket I made and he also gave me a basket and a hat he made.

I am usually a quiet, introverted person so this was certainly
out of my
comfort zone but I am glad I did it.

Henrietta, I think ed will send Dan pictures.

 P. S. I gave him a twenty dollar tip and I think he got some
free
 advertising.
